I really like the contrast in light and dark within this picture. It looks and feels like the first rays of evening sunshine after a rainy day (something that I am used to in Wales).
Originality: This has high marks as no other sunbeam type photos have captured the feeling that this one has. It's quite hopeful actually. The choice of silhouetting the tree-scape is also an interesting one, the abrupt transition from light to dark also makes this stand out.
Technique: The artist clearly knows what they wanted to capture and had the skill level to attain it to a spectacular degree. Keeping the range of light and colour levels, while at the same time not losing contrast in other areas is a pretty good achievement. The tree section in the does unfortunately have a "stuck-on" effect, but I believe that to be due to the abrupt change in light levels that seems to be an integral part of the composition.
Impact: Living in Wales I get a lot of rainy days where you wish for a glimpse of the sun to clear away a depressing day and this photo for me represents that - and how a simple ray of sunlight can breathe life back into your day.
I don't often stop to look at pictures of sun beams coming down from the sky. Everyone that has ever held a camera in their hands has tried to capture what you have here. The operative word is "tried". You actually pulled this off in a manner that pulls the viewer in with the dramatic contrast between the blackened trees and the golden fingers of light reaching down. You can see the details of the clouds and almost glimpse the layers of heaven. The atmosphere of the piece as a whole makes me want to bathe under that sky. If I were to change anything, I would like to see a little more detail in the texture of the trees vs the stark silhouettes they are here. (That may seem contrary to my previous statement loving the contrast, but I believe you have the talent to pull both aspects off.) I love when I come across things that seem so simple on first glance, but become so much more upon further inspection. I think you know you are good at what you do.
